Práce podává stručný přehled vývoje léčby peptického vředu od konce XIX. století do současnosti. Zmíněna je léčba hladověním, antacidy, anticholinergiky a terapie chirurgická. Významným zlomem bylo zavedení antagonistů H2 receptorů v 70. letech. Rozhodující přínos v terapii peptického vředu znamenalo zavedení inhibitorů protonové pumpy (PPI), které umožnily nejen účinné a rychlé hojení peptických lézí, ale i eradikaci H. pylori, a tím ve velké většině případů prevenci recidiv u velké skupiny peptických vředů, které nazýváme vředovou chorobou. I v léčbě a prevenci sekundárních peptických vředů (např. indukovaných užíváním nesteroidních antiflogistik) jsou PPI rozhodující. Nejužívanějším přípravkem ze skupiny PPI v České republice je omeprazol.
