Given the diabetes pandemic in the recent decades, it is essential to concentrate on timely and adequate treatment of diabetes as well as
on preventing organ-specific complications. Diabetic foot syndrome affects up to 10 % of patients with diabetes, with 50 % of diabetics
having multiple risk factors for developing the syndrome. The proportion of diabetic patients among those with high-level amputation
of the lower limb remains high. The normal process of wound healing is slowed in diabetics; infection and gangrene develop much earlier
and have a more severe course. The factors crucial for the prognosis of diabetic ulcerations are infection, ischaemia, method of wound
care and, most of all, prevention of development of the lesion itself. At the GP’s surgery, surveillance of patients at risk, their repeated
education, early detection of a developing complication and its adequate treatment are of particular importance.
