Influenza versus common cold - what to do?

MUDr. Marianna Augustínová
Infekční oddělení, Fakultní nemocnice Olomouc

The article addresses the issue of the common cold and influenza as the most frequent viral diseases of the respiratory tract, focusing on their epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The common cold comprises a set of mild to moderately severe respiratory symptoms, most commonly caused by rhinoviruses. The disease is highly prevalent, and its manifestations are generally mild to moderate in severity. Treatment is symptomatic; antibiotics are used only in cases of bacterial superinfection. Prevention is based primarily on adherence to hygienic measures. Influenza is a highly contagious disease, typically characterized by a predominance of systemic symptoms. Influenza viruses exhibit a high capacity for antigenic variation, leading to the occurrence of epidemics and pandemics. Diagnosis is based on laboratory confirmation of the virus with the clinical presentation. Treatment is mainly symptomatic, with antiviral therapy also being used. Influenza may result in several serious complications, particularly in high-risk groups. The most effective form of influenza prevention is annual vaccination. The text emphasizes the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate therapeutic management in both diseases.

Keywords: virus, rhinovirus, flu, common cold, vaccination.
