Gallstone disease, cholecystectomy indication

MUDr. Zuzana Adamová, Ph.D.
Chirurgické oddělení, Vsetínská nemocnice, a. s.

Gallbladder disease affects up to 20% of the European population and, if managed incorrectly, can lead to high rates of morbidity. The most common complications of gallstones include biliary colic, acute cholecystitis, common bile duct stones, and gallstone pancreatitis. Regular physical activity and an appropriate diet are the most important measures for the prevention of gallstone disease. Ultrasound is the initial imaging modality of choice. Biliary colic, acute cholecystitis and bigger gallbladder polyps are best treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy, cholecystitis ideally in the first 24hours. Asymptomatic patients do not belong to the operation theatre.

Keywords: cholecystolithiasis, cholecystectomy, gallbladder polyps.
