Saturation with calcium and vitamin D is traditionally associated with protection of the skeleton. Current COVID-19 epidemic highlighted the need for maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D for our immune system. Knowledge regarding vitamin D and calcium saturation is growing at an unprecedented rate and we now know that supplementation and sufficient levels are important for prevention and treatment of numerous conditions in obstetrics and gynaecology and pediatrics.

Addressing respiratory infections is a common reason to visit a pharmacy. Although the cause of problems can be diverse in terms of inducing agents, many of them can be addressed through self-medication. In 2020, COVID ‑ 19, which is caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, is a very current topic. Symptomatic treatment is indicated as monotherapy for respiratory infections of primarily viral etiology, otherwise it is administered as an adjunct to causal treatment. We currently have a range of over-the-counter drugs from various pharmacotherapeutic groups. In addition to drugs, phytopharmaceuticals can also be used. An essential part of the treatment...

Stroke is the second most common cause of mortality worldwide and the third most common cause of disability. Arterial hypertension is the most prevalent risk factor for stroke. A precise management of arterial hypertension prevents the first episode of stroke as well as its recurrence. A rapid blood pressure lowering is not recommended in the acute phase of stroke. Blood pressure goals in chronic treatment are 140/90 mm Hg and lower, if tolerated. ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers in combination with calcium channel blockers or indapamide are the preferred antihypertensive drugs.

The intestinal microbial composition changes with aging in a variable manner. The composition and function of gut microbiota closely correlates with health status of older adults. Microbiota-targeted interventions present a promising option for impacting longevity and healthy aging. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host (1). The data obtained from younger age groups cannot be automatically extrapolated to the elderly, nor will results acquired from older individuals with a good health status necessarily apply to those with multiple co-morbidities or frailty. Therefore, additional...

The present article provides a comprehensive review of various methods of treating hemorrhoids, ranging from outpatient care to surgical management, including the current options of stapled technique. The indications for particular procedures are discussed based on the clinical examination and "staging" of the disease. The authors aim at analyzing the individual methods of treatment and differentiating their use.

Despite advances in modern medicine, invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) belongs to infectious diseases with a high fatality rate and a high rate of serious lifelong sequelae in survivors. Atypical courses of IMD have been described, particularly in association with some meningococcal serogroups and/or complement disorders. In serogroup Y, the hypervirulent clonal complex cc23 has been predominant in a number of countries in recent years, causing an atypical course of IMD, often with a clinical presentation of pneumonia, with a high fatality rate. In serogroup W, the hypervirulent clonal complex cc11, commonly its "UK-modification", has been predominant...

Vertigo is a serious differential diagnostic problem. Particularly in acute vertigo, serious undrelying condtions, like stroke in vertebrobasilary circulation must be excluded. Despite this fact, majority of vertiginous problems are not life threatening. Based on knowledge of basic diagnostic algorhitms, correct diagnosis and treatment of vertigo can be done in outpatient care.

Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) is a dipeptide composed of the amino acid β-alanine and the L-histidine. Carnosine and both amino acids are found in the brain and skeletal muscle of all vertebrates. The physiological function of carnosine in brain tissue is to protect intracellular proteins from damage by oxygen radicals, modification by glycation and formation of cross-links between protein chains. In skeletal muscle, carnosine reduces muscle fatigue caused by increased lactic acid levels and decreased tissue pH. With increasing biological age, carnosine concentration in both brain tissue and white skeletal muscle fibres decreases. There...

Gallbladder disease affects up to 20% of the European population and, if managed incorrectly, can lead to high rates of morbidity. The most common complications of gallstones include biliary colic, acute cholecystitis, common bile duct stones, and gallstone pancreatitis. Regular physical activity and an appropriate diet are the most important measures for the prevention of gallstone disease. Ultrasound is the initial imaging modality of choice. Biliary colic, acute cholecystitis and bigger gallbladder polyps are best treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy, cholecystitis ideally in the first 24hours. Asymptomatic patients do not belong to the operation...

In routine clinical practice, venous wall pathology is most commonly manifested as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Venopharmaceuticals are often used here as part of conservative treatment, very often also in their mutual combination. The presented text summarizes the current knowledge about the fixed combination of Rusci extractum, hesperidin and vitamin C in the medicinal product Cyclo 3 Fort, both in terms of the mechanism of action and the evaluation of own clinical experience and anchoring in existing guidelines.

Care for common problems like low back pain needs to be structured and rational. Low back pain is a symptom with a high incidence and prevalence, yet is rarely a symptom of severe pathology. Procedures based on a system of warning signs and psychosocial factors meet the requirements of accurate diagnosis, saving time and material resources. The aim of the work was to provide support to general practitioners for caring for patients with acute low back pain, at the same time presenting evidence of the legitimacy and safety of this method of treatment. Accordingly, summary material describing how to care for patients with acute low back pain was created....
